Brentwood Town v Burnham Ramblers
Ryman League North
Mitchell Young reports
One goal was enough to win this bottom of the table clash after a late goal with minutes remaining of the game by Neil Richmond to take all three points for the away side.
The first half was a stalemate with only a few chances to talk about, despite the home side controlling most of the half with their possession. Brentwood struggled to create any clear cut chances in the half and this showed with no shots on target in the first half. However the two chances of the half came from the away side which should have been taken. The first main effort came in the 16th minute as Neil Richmond burst down the right side and managed to cut his cross back to Mike Sammut unmarked around the penalty spot, but smashed his shot well over. The other main talking point was moments before the break Ricky Evans whipped a dangerous far post ball to Richmond, who squared it across goal to Liam Burgess only yards out put the ball over the crossbar. As both sides went into the break all level with neither side looking to break the deadlock at this stage.
The second half had more in the way of chances, with the first going to Burnham three minutes in as a ball not cleared away from danger fell to Evans to smash a shot towards goal but hit the inside of the post and was scrambled away by the home side. After early pressure from the away side Brentwood started to dominate and create chances, as Martin Toohy dinked a ball over the defence to put through Sos Yao to attack the goal but his shot at the near post just went the wrong side of the goal to stay goalless. The following 20 minutes of the game was stop start with substitutions from both sides as the home side replaced Jack Gardener for Nick Barrett and Toohy for Scott Williams. With only six minutes remaining Bentwood thought they had won it after captain James Lowe fired a shot from 20 yards out, looked to be heading in but hit the crossbar and then was followed up by Barrett to smash well over. As the game continued it looked to be heading for a stalemate but with three minutes of normal time remaining, a dangerous ball across the box by Burnham was tapped home by Neil Richmond to put them in front. Burnham managed to hold on and seal the three points despite Brentwood’s best effort as they see themselves slip further away from the visitors in the table.
