10-man UEL 2nds progress to last 16

10-man University of East London 2nds progressed to the last 16 of the South East Conference Cup as they won 3-1 against University of Herefordshire 2nds.

Michael Ogboin grabbed a second half hat-trick with his first from the penalty spot. Despite substitute Alan Egunyemi given a straight red for violent conduct.

Dan Robinson denied the visitors the lead 24 minutes in as a far post cross was headed goalwards and emphatically saved at full stretch by ‘The Geordie’.

Minutes later Robinson kept out Herefordshire once again, as a miss timed header by Conrad Roka fell to the away winger as his shot was blocked, due to the stature of UEL keeper.

Before the break Simon Omooba had a shot on the edge of the box which went inches wide.

UEL made a second half substitution as Egunyemi replaced Omooba and won his side a penalty as he was brought down by the Herefordshire keeper, six minutes into the half.

As Ogboin stepped up to take the penalty, off the ball Egunyemi was elbowed on the edge of the box which was not spotted by the referee and sent off Egunyemi for his retaliation.

Ogboin did finally step up to fire the penalty past the keeper to give UEL the lead.

Cemal Agdelen’s free-kick on the right hand side looked to be over hit but nearly founds it’s way in as it came off the crossbar.

Herefordshire equalised 73 minutes in as the strikers shot crept under Robinson to nestle into the net.

UEL held strong despite down to 10-men and went in front after a great move involving Agdelen and William Semain as he cut the ball back for Ogboin to weave past the defenders and poke it home.

The hosts extended their lead a minute later from a solo run from Semain into the far corner, laid it off for a great cross which fell to Ogboin to lash the shot into roof of the net for his hat-trick.

Herefordshire were awarded a penalty for a late challenge two minutes later, with a chance to put pressure on UEL. Robinson gave the striker the eyes and saved the penalty down low to his right.

UEL will now face University of Greenwich 1st in two weeks time, who are yet to register a win this season.
