University of East London 2nd’s got their first victory of the season with a slender 2-1 win over table toppers University of Herefordshire 3rds at Beckton District Park.
Tobi Adesina’s first half brace was enough to hold off the South Eastern 4D league leaders despite a late goal from Herefordshire, which turned out to be just a consolation.
UEL now move off the bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone and will now look further up the table.
The East London side started brightly and almost caught Herefordshire off guard three minutes in, as the ball was worked out to Adesina whose powerful side footed volley rocketed off the crossbar.
Herefordshire nearly got the opener as their striker broke away from the defence and was in on goal but his shot beat Dan Robinson but went wide of the post.
UEL were awarded a penalty from a corner as the ball was whipped in the Herefordshire defender pulled down Harry Matthews, which the referee pointed straight to the spot.
Adesina stepped up and fired the spot kick hard and low into the bottom left corner giving the away keeper no chance.
The home side doubled their lead 15 minutes later as Michael Ogboin found some space on the edge of the box. His miscued shot fell kindly into the path of Adesina, took one touch out of his feet and fizzed a swerving shot inside the near post.
In the second half UEL controlled the game and contained the visitors and almost grabbed a third as Harry Matthews seized on a loose ball in the box, tipped it over the keeper but was cleared off the line by the Herefordshire defender.
Herefordshire got a goal back four minutes from time as the Herefordshire striker tucked it past Robinson.
UEL has a nervous last few minutes but saw out the pressure. Robinson gave away a free-kick on the edge of his box for handling the ball outside the box.
