Brentwood Town were denied a place in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup after they were held goalless away to Hoddesdon Town at Lowfield.
Neither side could grab the all-important goal to go through to the next round despite Hoddesdon’s great efforts – who are the equivalent to two leagues below Brentwood, as they look to the replay at the Arena on Tuesday.
Dean Holdsworth made three changes to his side that lost at home to Mersham, as Andrew Freeman replaces the injured Leon Gordon at left-back. New signing Craig Reid from Kidderminster comes in to join Brentwood’s frontline for Tom Richardson, as Leon Fisher starts replaces Sam Lechmere.
Hoddesdon had the brighter start, as a long ball up by Reece Buck was flicked on to put Tommy Wade through on goal but his shot was straight at Martyn Guest.
Brentwood had their first threat on goal, as Nicky Symons whipped the ball back into the box from a half clearance – which Captain Martyn Stokes headed goalwards but went just wide of the far post.
Hoddesdon put Brentwood under pressure through a succession of corners as Charlie Edwards’ high corner was headed high at the far post by Jack Barrett which bounced off the outside of the post and off Guest.
The resulting corner was then taken by Ricky Light on the opposite side which Guest had to palm over the bar, as it almost went straight in to deny Hoddesdon the lead.
The home side should have opened the scoring, as the ball was worked out wide for Joss Lillis who cut the ball back across the box for Wade to shoot from six-yards but came back off the post.
In the second half, Edwards had another dangerous set piece which Barrett met but was cleared acrobatically by Stokes to deny ‘The Lilywhites’.
Brentwood then had an opportunity, as Hahn’s long throw was flicked on by Ryan O’Rawe which came off the top of the crossbar.
‘The Blues’ had were mounting the pressure on the home side, as Leon Fisher burst down the left flank and squared the ball across the box for Jamie Guy, who could not turn it in.
Brentwood almost snatch the tie with five minutes remaining, as Reid’s low shot bounced off the post and came back into the hands of Buck’s, as both sides had to settle for a replay.
Hoddesdon or Brentwood will know their opponents going into the replay back at the Brentwood Arena on Tuesday evening for either side to make history and reach the fourth qualifying round for the first time.
