The Essex A team stormed into the semi-finals of the Inter County Competition, after a 31-9 victory over Gloucestershire at Daventry Indoor Bowls Club.
Essex proved too strong for Gloucester despite five enforced changes, with a grand second half performance to see them through to the next knockout stage.
The first half was tight between the two sides, as Jonathan East could not be separated by the Gloucester singles player as he drew 11-11. Pauline Childs was also fairly matched, as she was held 16-16.
In the pairs Essex had a mixed bag, as county manager Dave Chittock and Paul Glenister were beaten 18-10. Whereas Kay and Peter Debenham restored the deficit with a 21-11 victory to level the session 4-4.
The second session was much the same, as Andy Philbrick, Eileen Smith-Allan and county captain Rob Wade won narrowly 11-8. Unfortunately Pat High, Adrian Atkinson and Pat Goodchild went down 12-10.
In the fours Collin Addis, Rob Taylor, Alan High and John Wade won comfortably 16-3. The other quartet Peggy May, Josh Woods, Sandra Stanton and Brenda Crowe were edged out 12-8; to go in at the break 8-8.
Essex upped the tempo in the second half, as Childs won handy 18-7 and East came through 15-10 winners to snatch the bonus points in the singles.
In the pairs, Essex swept up again as Chittock and Glenister won 19-12.
The Debenhams’ made it two from two as they ran out 17-8 victors and took the bonus points for a clean sweep and a 20-8 lead with only a point needed in the final session for victory.
But Essex were not just going to fall asleep they then went for the jugular as Philbrick, Smith-Allan and Wade won 14-9. Essex trio High, Atkinson and Goodchild were held 11-11 as Essex took the bonus points in the triples.
The fours finished with a flurry as Addis, Taylor, High and Wade won 17-13. May, Woods, Stanton and Crowe completed Essex’s convincing win with a 10-4 victory and bonus points to complete the 31-9 win.
Essex will now look ahead to the semi-finals where they will face the Inter County Rink champions Devon.
